List of IPL Winners: Teams won the IPL Title & their Records

Indian Premier League also know as IPL T20 is founded by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. The league is played in T20 format every year in the month of April – May. Till now 8 season has been completed and 5 teams won the IPL title so far. Full List of IPL winners of all times are given below.

Every year new auction is held where franchise have chances to make their favorite player on their side. BCCI has laid some rules for the team composition as follows:

IPL Rules for Each Team :

  • There will be minimum 16 players in each team, one coach and one physiotherapist.
  • Min 14 Indian players will be included in team.
  • Six players out of the total squad will be from BCCI under-22.
  • Maximum 4 foreign player can be in playing XI and only 10 foreign players can be bought by any franchise.

Three franchise namely Deccan Chargers, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India has been folded whereas Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are banned for the next two seasons for their role in match fixing and betting scandal.

Total eight IPL seasons have been played till now for which only five teams are successful to make the tournament in their names.

IPL 2008 : 

The first season of Indian Premier League started on 18 April 2008 and ended on 1st June 2008. Eight teams participated in the first season were Rajasthan Royals , Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings , Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers. There were 3 stages in the tournament, the group stage, two semifinals and a final. In group stage it is a double round robin stage, in which each team played two matches against every other team one in home ground and another an away match. The semifinal was played between Rajasthan Royals vs  Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab vs Chennai Super Kings. The two teams which proceeded to final stage by wining over their opponents were Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. The final match was nail biter match which went down till the last ball and Rajasthan Royals emerged as first season IPL winner.

IPL 2009 : 

2009 season of Indian premier league was hosted in South Africa due to some reasons of security and corruptions and betting. The tournament started on 18 April 2009 and ended with a final battle between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore on 24 May. The format remains unchanged for the second season.The teams which entered semifinal by topping the group stage were Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore. In final Deccan Chargers became IPL winner of 2009 by defeating Royal Challengers by 6 runs and made the tournament in their names.

IPL 2010 : 

The third season of IPL was played in India between 12 March and 25 April 2010.The matches were played in same format as in previous season. The four top teams from group stages made their way to semi final and was played between Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings vs Deccan Chargers. Mumbai Indians beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs and Chennai Super Kings defeated Deccan Chargers by 38 runs. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings battled in finals in which Chennai Super kings won by 22 runs.

IPL 2011: 

In IPL season 4 the number of teams played increased to 10 as two new teams were included Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. After group matches, a four game play off stage was introduced in which their will be 4 matches that are Qualifier-1(between first and second ranked team in group stage), Eliminator ( between third and fourth ranked team in group stage), Qualifier-2 (between the loser of the Qualifier 1 and winner of the Eliminator) and the final match between Qualifier-1 and 2 winners. Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore were able to meet in finals by qualifying play off stage. CSK became the first team of IPL to win the tournament twice by defeating RCB by 58 runs.

IPL 2012 :

The IPL 5 season started with the termination of one team Kochi Tuskers Kerala and was played between nine teams only. This season of IPL was the most exciting nail biters tournament with matches producing result in last overs. The final was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Defending Champion Chennai Super kings in which Kolkata won by 5 wickets and became the IPL winner of 2012 season

IPL 2013 :

After Kochi Tuskers, Deccan Chargers (2009 IPL Champions) was the second team to be terminated and is replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad. With end of group stages, the top 4 highest rank team were CSK, MI, RR and SRH. Chennai beat MI in Qualifier-1 and was the first team to reach final. Mumbai Indians reached final by defeatiing the winner of eliminator Rajasthan Royals. Mumbai Indians won their first ever title of IPL winner by defeating CSK in finals.

IPL 2014 :

This season Pune Warrior was the team to be withdrawn and season was played between eight teams. This time the tournament was hosted in two countries: United States of Arab and in India due to elections in India.The tournament ended with Kolkata Knight Riders as IPL winners of season 7. Kings XI Punjab was the runner-up who lost by 3 wickets in final.

IPL 2015 :

IPL winner of 2015 was once again Mumbai Indians who defeated Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs in final. Total eight teams participated in this season. Royal Challengers and Rajasthan Royal are the two teams other than the final teams who reached the play off rounds.

Next season of the tournament is about to start from 9th April 2016 with two new teams Pune & Gujarat. The IPL 2016 schedule is not announced yet but dates are already provided by the officials.
